5 Questions to Ask Your Plastic Surgeon before Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a procedure that involves many choices in order to ensure the outcome you desire. The size of your implant, location of the incision and even the placement of the implant inside the breast tissue are just a few of the decisions you will need to make prior to your procedure. To help make those choices a bit easier, there are some questions you can ask your plastic surgeon at Melbourne Institute of Plastic Surgery before breast augmentation.

Which type of implant will give me the best results?

At Melbourne Institute of Plastic Surgery, we offer both saline and silicone implants to our patients. Both types have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages. Saline implants can be adjusted once they are placed into the breast tissue, to ensure the best possible proportions. Silicone implants tend to look and feel more natural, and are often recommended for more slender patients for this reason.

How do I choose size, shape and profile?

Implants come in both teardrop and round shapes, with different profiles to give the breasts a variety of protrusions. It can be difficult to know which implant will give you the best possible results. Our surgeons will help you visualise what different implants will look like and discuss the pros and cons of each to help you make the best choice for your specific body shape, size and desired outcome.

What incision will work the best?

There are three basic types of incisions used for breast augmentation; around the areola, underneath the breast or in the armpit. All of these options result in very little visible post-operative scarring. Some of the choice in incision placement will be based on your personal preference, while other factors might include the size and type of implant used.

Where should the implant be placed?

Breast implants can be placed either on top of or underneath the pectoral muscle. Slender women may select placement under the muscle, so that the edges of the implant are less likely to be seen on the surface of the breast. Skin thickness, chest wall and existing breast size will also be factors in determining the best placement for your implants.

What should I expect from the procedure?

The plastic surgeons at Melbourne Institute of Plastic Surgery perform breast augmentation at their practice, using general anaesthesia. Most patients go home the same day, although a few might require an overnight stay in the hospital. Recovery typically takes around a week, but strenuous activity is discouraged for much longer.

With many decisions to make before your breast augmentation procedure, it is important to choose a plastic surgeon experienced in this procedure that will listen to your concerns and help you make the best choices for your specific needs.
